Our Mission

The One Step Ahead Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering children with physical challenges through positive, confidence-building experiences in sport and movement. Our mission is to help children develop self-confidence, courage, and meaningful connections while creating experiences that strengthen their sense of self-worth and carry forward throughout their lives. We place a special focus on supporting children with limb loss, providing access to athletic opportunities that encourage participation, independence, and growth.

The foundation was founded by Amy Palmiero-Winters, a world-class endurance athlete and mother of two who lost her left leg below the knee in a motorcycle accident in 1994. Since her injury, Amy has achieved numerous world records and milestone “firsts” as a female amputee in marathons, triathlons, and ultramarathons. Through these accomplishments, she became a role model for young people with physical challenges and began working closely with children, introducing them to sport as a pathway to confidence and possibility. This work ultimately led to the creation of the One Step Ahead Foundation to expand access to these opportunities for even more families.

Children with physical challenges may sometimes avoid physical activities, which can contribute to anxiety, frustration, and lowered self-esteem. A positive self-image is essential to a child’s well-being and long-term success. By fostering encouragement, mentorship, and achievement through sport, the foundation helps children build the confidence to challenge limiting beliefs and recognize their own strength. Our goal is for every child to be defined not by their physical differences, but by their abilities, resilience, and potential.

The foundation relies on the generosity of donors to provide a year-round calendar of athletic programs and team experiences. Participants engage in activities such as skiing, running, rock climbing, camping, triathlons, road races, dance, and swimming, learning independence, responsibility, teamwork, and leadership along the way. Children are also encouraged to give back by volunteering and mentoring others with physical challenges, reinforcing the value of community and shared success.

The One Step Ahead Foundation is entirely volunteer-run, ensuring that 100% of donations directly support programming for children with limb loss and, in select cases, assist with access to prosthetic care.
